Tree Surgeons (Contractors)

This list of tree surgeons has been compiled from various sources and it is intended simply as a means of easy reference. The schedule is not intended to be comprehensive and it is presented without implied recommendation.

Firms marked with an asterisk (*) are registered with the Arboricultural Association as 'approved contractors' who have been examined for safe working practices and technical competence.

Work undertaken by tree surgeons comprises pruning, shaping, thinning, cable bracing, stump removal and felling, including the removal of trees in dangerous condition or in difficult locations. Planting and maintenance work such as pest and disease control may also be undertaken.

Guidance Notes

• Tree surgeons may give free estimates (approximate cost) or quotations (fixed price)
  Be specific about your requirements.
• Decide what work you require doing, before inviting tenders. Consider the disposal of prunings, timber etc., which will affect the cost of the job.
• Obtain more than one estimate/quotation which will allow comparison of prices.
• Indicate when you would like the work carried out to enable the tree surgeon to advise you whether it is convenient.
  Price alone may not be the governing factor when engaging a contractor.
• Clarify how long the estimate or quotation is valid and make clear your terms of acceptance.

• Ask for proof of comprehensive insurance in respect of personal injury and accidental damage to property before appointing a tree surgeon.
• Check that the work will be carried out to the British Standard 3998: Recommendations for Tree Work, 1989.

Protected Trees

Check with Bridgnorth District Council (01746 713149) to find out whether your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or by being located within a Conservation Area. Occasionally Planning Conditions may also apply. If your tree is protected, then you will need written consent to carry out any works. Work to protected trees without consent is illegal.

Remember - Professional surgery should make a tree safer and prolong its useful life, whereas unskilled work can spoil a tree's appearance and be dangerous to both the operator and to the public.
