Worfield map

Map illustrated by Kendall Walford from Oldbury Wells School

Start/parking: Village hall at Worfield just off A454 Wolverhampton-Bridgnorth road.

Grade: Moderate.

Distance: Seven miles.

Terrain: Gently undulating on field and woodland paths. Path to High Rock is narrow and uneven in parts. Quiet lanes.

Refreshments: Non en route. The Dog Inn and shop in Worfield.

Recommended map: OS Explorer 218 Wyre Forest.

The spectacular viewpoint of High Rock is the high point of this walk which starts from the pretty village of Worfield. The sandstone rock standing proud above the River Severn provides a platform for a wonderful view out across the river and Bridgnorth with the Clee Hills as a classical backdrop.

The Route

(1) From village hall go left on the road. At the road junction, and just before entrance to Davenport House, go left over a stile. Go forward over the field. Pass the end of a fence, left, with River Worfe over to left. Continue ahead bearing gradually right up to a stile in to the wood.

(2) Go ahead on clear woodland path. Crest the rise and continue forward down to climb a stile exiting the wood. Go ahead bearing slightly right to cross a footbridge then a stile going forward to exit on to the A454. Go right on the wide verge to take the first lane, right, for just over a mile. Pass Burcote Villa Farm, ignore path left, and after about 50 yards go right on signed footpath through gateway.

(3) Immediately go left down a track and within a few paces of passing a corrugated iron barn slant left up to a gate. Go ahead over the field and at the facing fenceline go left and ahead, through a gateway, and out on to the lane at the hamlet of Fenn Gate.
(The walk can be shortened by going right on the lane).

(4) To visit the viewpoint of High Rock go right and immediately left and ahead on unmade drive ignoring stile, left, to which the walk returns. Pass immediately to the right of two cottages and ahead on an enclosed path. Continue ahead on a clear path down through woodland. At a marker post ignore the descending path, right, and bear left and ahead on the higher route - which in parts is narrow and uneven - to emerge at High Rock. Continue ahead on meandering path to eventually arrive at a T-junction and marker post at the woodland edge.

High Rock

(5) Go left on a path which, within a short distance, branches right to a stile. Cross and go left on the field boundary. Over another stile and continue forward to pass immediately to the right of a brick structure. Through a gateway and straight down the arable field, over a fence stile and forward to exit on to the lane at Fenn Gate. Go left on the lane and when it bends sharp right continue forward through gateway.

(6) Go forward over the arable field, crest the brow and down to a stile adjacent a solitary oak tree. Cross and ahead and when the hedge goes right bear half right up the slope to a gateway out on to the road at Bromley. Go right on the lane and when the road bends right go left - at phone box - and within a few paces go right over stile. Go half right to a redundant stile and then half left down to pass immediately to right of power line post to bear left down to stile. Cross and veer right to follow boundary for short distance to cross stile. Go left to pass immediately left of pump house, over a stile and half right across paddock. Go right and then left on unmade road to cross footbridge.

Rindleford Mill (7) At Rindleford mill do not exit on to lane but at Mill House go right to follow a driveway - ignoring path, right. Pass through gateway and go ahead on the drive to eventually cross the river to pass immediately to right of a house. Cross stile and go ahead on path which bends right and goes ahead at the foot of standstone cliff. Keep the clear path as it climbs above the river to pass a cottage to go left over a stile and half left to a gate. Go ahead to join a track which swings right and on to a gate. Go through the left-hand gateway and half left down to climb stile. Go right for a few paces and then bear left with the river on your left and ahead to a footbridge.

(8) Cross the bridge and go ahead up the field bearing slightly right - with Davenport House up to the left - to stile. Go forward on a track up the field, cross estate road and ahead to go down steep slope to climb stile. Go half left to rejoin outward path at Worfield.
