Burcote Walk
A Picturesque river valley
|
Map illustrated by Kendall Walford from Oldbury Wells School |
|
Start: On minor road leading to hamlet of Burcote about two miles east of Bridgnorth. Leave the A454 Wolverhampton-Bridgnorth road at roundabout on the brow of Hermitage Hill on minor road signed Bromley. Take the first road on the right for about a quarter of a mile. Park on left-hand verge, without obstructing gateway, near footpath finger post on the left. Grade: Easy. Distance: Three and a half miles. Terrain: Mainly level walking on field paths and tracks with few very gentle gradients. Quiet lanes. Refreshments: Non en route. Recommended map: OS Explorer 218 Wyre Forest and Kidderminster. |
Probably the most picturesque stretch of the River Worfe which meanders its way through east Shropshire is the final section before it joins the River Severn just upstream from Bridgnorth. This walk explores some of this area as the Worfe cuts its way through a sandstone gorge at Burcote and then flows along the most delightful green valley on its approach to Rindleford with is former flour mill.
The Route
(1) At the footpath finger post walk through the gateway and immediately go left and down through the gap in the hedge. Bear right to go ahead on a track passing a metal barn on your right. Ignore a gate up to the left and continue forward down the field keeping to the left-hand boundary to cross a stile in the bottom corner. Go ahead on a clear path through bracken to emerge on to a track.

(2) Go right to follow the track passing through a gateway. When the track bends sharp right to make an ascent through woodland (Private Woods sign) veer left on what initially is a grassy footpath which leads to the River Worfe. |
|
(3) At the river go left to follow the riverside path to the hamlet of Rindleford. Cross two footbridges and follow the enclosed path around the former mill. When the footpath ends go right and ahead on an unmade road passing through a gateway. Keep this roadway crossing the river via a stone bridge and on to a white house. |

(4) At the house the right of way goes forward over the cattle grid to pass immediately to the right of the property to a stile. There is a signed alternative route avoiding the stile. Go ahead on a footpath which bends right to follow the foot of a sandstone cliff face. Climb a stile and continue on a footpath which climbs above the river which is down to the left. The path passes immediately to the right of a cottage. |
(5) At the end of the cottage garden ignore a stile, left, and go right up a footpath which follows an old holloway. Go ahead on an enclosed path which bends left. At a farm drive, at Burcote House, go right up to the road.
(6) At the road go right to follow the lane, passing a farm on the right and ignoring footpaths off, back to the starting point.
