Much Wenlock Railway Line

Much Wenlock

The Old Railway Line

The last train pulled out of Wenlock station in 1962. Today the remains of the track stretches half a mile through the site offering pleasant walks along the Farley Valley. The station house is now a private residence. The railway was opened in 1861 to serve the malting and tanning industries of the town, and brought thousands of visitors to the Much Wenlock Olympic Games. In fact the railway line runs along side the Linden Field, where the Wenlock Olympics are still held today. The Games, were founded by William Penny Brooks in 1850, who campaigned internationally for the revival of the ancient Greek games.
