Donington Pool Nature Reserve
|
Bridgnorth district's only Local Nature Reserve. The 13 acre site consists of an area of mature wet woodland, very rich birdlife, an old fish pond, plus wildflower meadows and St. Cuthbert's Well. Paths around the reserve are suitable for pedestrian use only. There is disabled access to the pool area and St. Cuthbert's Meadow from Rectory Road. Part of the woodland is closed to public access. History of the siteOriginally the Humphreston Stream formed most of the boundary between Donington and Albrighton. Then in the early 17th century a miller called John Talbot created the pool by putting a dam across the stream at Rectory road, causing the pool to flood at Donington and Albrighton. His intention was to provide a constant supply of of water to his mill. John Talbot was ordered to pay a fine to Donington, escaping a fine at Albrighton as he had been granted permission for his mill at an earlier date. The original pool John Talbot created was much bigger than it is today. |

St. Cuthbert's Well
This is a small pool area which is fed by a separate source to the Donington Pool. It is surrounded on all sides by mature mixed woodland, including Beech and Yew, which are protected by tree preservation orders. The artist Richard Taylor attended a family fun day where local families helped to decorate tiles with copper rubbings, which have now been used to make a feature around the well.
St. Cuthbert's Meadow
This is an area of rough grass and woodland, which the Humphreston stream runs through. Oak, Beech, Horse Chestnut and Willow trees were planted on the open grass land area in 1996/7. Alder and Lime trees also run along side the stream and are protected by tree preservation orders. The Alder's are multi-stemmed and about 60-70 feet in height.
Art SculptureThe Arts council has awarded a grant to Donington Pool, some of this has been utilised in the form of a copper art sculpture of fish, which is positioned in the centre of the pool. The artist Richard Taylor has been worked with local people to interpret the pool and its surroundings in the best way possible. Most of the figure is sculpted from copper with the edition of rocks and a solar panel, which powers the water fountains from the fishes mouths. FishingThe fishing rights on the pool are leased to the Royal British Legion Fishing Club in Albrighton. |
