Shropshire and Telford Activity Referral Scheme

What is STARS?

STARS is an eight-week course of exercise under the supervision of qualified staff.

Since its launch more than 10 years ago, the Activity Referral Scheme has improved the quality of life of countless individuals.

The scheme which runs countywide, is supported by both the Shropshire Primary Care Trust and Telford and Wrekin Primary Care Trust.

What does the course involve? Health assessment Individually tailored exercise programme Supervised gym, walk and water based sessions Cardiac rehabilitation exercise sessions Attending an eight-week programme of exercise of two to three hourly sessions per week Being a member of a supportive group (usually 10-12 people) Final assessment

Aims of the scheme

To encourage the long term participation in exercise by raising people's awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity.

To promote a healthier lifestyle with a view to reducing coronary heart disease.

Type of exercise

As part of STARS we give you the opportunity to take part in the following:

• Fitness suite
• Swimming/exercise in water
• Walking
• Exercise to music

BACR Sessions

BACR stands for the British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation. BACR sessions are designed specifically to help people with heart conditions.

• More emphasis on interspersing cardio work
• Greater emphasis on monitoring the intensity of exercise
• Increased warm up and cool down times
• Sessions led by fully qualified BACR instructors

The sessions are ideal for people recovering from heart conditions and operations. People suffering from angina will also benefit from the BACR sessions, helping to prevent future heart problems and heart attacks.

Who can join?

• Any person aged 16+ years
• Any person who wants to get into the habit of regular exercise
• Any person suffering with stress
• Any person with a medical history including diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure or heart disease

Once your form has been received from your GP you will be contacted within two weeks to arrange your assessment.

At the moment STARS takes place at Bridgnorth Sport and Leisure Centre and Idsall Sports Centre following referrals from GPs in the surrounding areas. You can contact the coordinator on 01746 761541.
