High Rock Walk
A lofty viewpoint
|
Map illustrated by Amy Walford from Oldbury Wells School |
|
Start: Severn car park off the A442 Telford road just north of the Bandon Arms roundabout. Grade: Moderate. Distance: Five miles. Terrain: Undulating, steepish in parts, on woodland and field paths some over arable land. The path to High Rock is narrow and uneven in places and can be slippery when wet. Refreshments: None en route. Recommended map: OS Explorer 218 Wyre Forest. |
From High Rock from there are stunning views across the River Severn to Bridgnorth with its classic skyline dominated by the two churches and with the Clee hills making a wonderful backdrop. This walk includes the viewpoint and also the peaceful hamlet of Bromley and the riverside settlement of Rindleford.
The Route
(1) From the car park walk back to the entrance, cross the road and go left on the pavement and right to the cemetery. Immediately before the cemetery entrance go left up steps. At the top go right on enclosed path into woodland. At the top of the steepish climb ignore paths right and continue ahead with the boundary fence right.

(2) At a fork at a marker post veer left initially downhill to follow a meandering and undulating path which hugs the side of the steep valley to eventually arrive at High Rock. Ignore steps carved out of the sandstone and continue forward to a view point. |
(3) Continue ahead on a narrow - and at times uneven - path. At a marker post ignore the downhill path and continue climbing as the route eventually leaves the woodland on tree-lined path passing left of a farm and goes ahead on the driveway to exit on to a road at the hamlet of Fenn Gate. (The walk returns to this point).
(4) Go left up the lane. When the road bends sharp right go forward through a gateway. The right of way goes straight ahead over the arable field. Cresting the rise continue ahead down the field to cross a stile immediately to the left of a large single tree. Go ahead on the field right-hand boundary. When the hedge goes off at a right-angle bear slightly left and forward down the valley to a stile in the bottom corner.
(5) Go right on the lane up into Bromley. In the hamlet go left at a phone box immediately before a sharp right-hand bend and after about 12 yards go right over a stile. Go half right and forward to a redundant stile. Go half left to pass immediately to the right of a wooden post carrying a power cable. Then go left down a steep bank to cross a stile. Go right on the field edge for a short distance and over a stile on the right. Go left and ahead to pass to the right of a pump house and forward to cross a facing stile. Go half right over a paddock to another stile to exit on to a lane opposite a house. Go left on the lane and ahead to cross the River Worfe via a footbridge and ahead on an enclosed footpath with the former Rindleford Mill on your right.
(6) Do not go on to the lane but, opposite Mill House, go right and within a few paces right again to follow an enclosed path to recross the river. Go ahead on the riverside path a short distance to a marker post. Here go right to head up out of the river valley. When the path joins a track veer slightly right and forward on a gentle ascent.
(7) Pass by the side of a gate and within a few steps go left on a clear path through an area of bracken. Cross a facing stile and head up the shallow valley on the right-hand boundary. Upon nearing the top of the field - just before an old wooden shelter - go sharp right up a track to a gate. Pass through and go straight ahead to the facing fenceline. At the fence go left and ahead on the field edge.
(8) Pass through a gateway and ahead on a house driveway to the road. Go right and within a few steps go left up to a stile. Proceed forward over the field a short distance to cross another stile. Go straight forward, as indicated, up the arable field to pass through a gateway. Continue ahead to pass immediately left of a brick structure on the crest. Continue ahead to the corner of the wood. Cross a stile and go ahead on the field edge to a stile on the right.
(9) Cross and follow the path which goes left along the inside edge of the wood. At a marker post continue forward. At a fork bear right downhill to retrace steps.
