This walk explores some woodland areas near the picturesque East Shropshire village of Worfield where, in spring, walkers can enjoy that real sign of warmer days ahead - bluebells. The route also tracks a delightful stretch of the River Worfe as it cuts its way through a sandstone gorge.

The Route

(1) From the village hall go left on the road, crossing over the River Worfe. At the road junction go left over a stile adjacent a gate - a short distance before the entrance to Davenport House. Go forward in the field, bearing slightly left to pass a redundant stile by the side of the River Worfe, left. Continue ahead, bearing right up to a stile at the tree-line.

Worfield Wood

(2) Cross and ahead on the clear path through the trees. Exit the wood via a stile/fence and go ahead, bearing slightly right to a footbridge and onto a stile. In the next field bear slightly left to a stile to exit onto the Wolverhampton-Bridgnorth road. Go right on the good wide verge. Ignore a footpath, right, and continue on the verge a short distance to a lane.

(3) Go right on the quiet road for just over half a mile, ignoring two farm driveways to the right. A short distance after passing two houses, on the left, go right on a signed footpath which starts at a wide entrance immediately after a copse. Keep this delightful wide path through trees down to the river and ahead alongside the water to the hamlet of Rindleford. On the approach to the converted mill cross two footbridges and follow the enclosed path round the mill.

Rindleford Mill

(4) At the end of the path do not go out on to the road, but go right on a stony track to pass immediately to the right of a white cottage to a gate. Through here and ahead on the metalled-grassy drive, over two cattle grids and river bridge to arrive at a white house. Here, either go right as indicated, or straight ahead over the cattle grid to pass immediately to the right of the house, to a stile.

Rindleford Path

(5) After the stile follow the sandstone bank round to the right and then straight ahead on a path a few yards from the rock face (on your right) to a stile. Cross and ahead on clear path, with the river down to your left, to a cottage. Immediately at the end of the cottage garden, go left over a stile and then half left to a gate. Go ahead as indicated to pick up wheel tracks and round to two gates.

(6) Go through the left-hand gateway and go half left down to a stile at the river bank. Cross and go right for about 13 yards, then half left towards the river and ahead to cross a footbridge. (The water wheel was used to turn a pump supplying spring water to Davenport House up on the hill). In the next field go ahead, bearing very slightly right, up to a stile. Cross and go ahead to follow the wheel tracks uphill. Cross an estate road and go ahead as indicated to drop down the steep embankment, crossing another estate road, to a stile. Cross and bear half left down the field back to the start.
