Homer Walk
Homer and a picturesque church
|
Map illustrated by Kendall Walford from Oldbury Wells School |
|
Start: Village green and phone box in the village of Homer just north of Much Wenlock off the A4169 Wenlock-Buildwas road. Grade: Moderate. Distance: Four and a half miles. Terrain: Undulating on field and woodland paths with several short steepish ascents and decents which can be muddy. One woodland path can get overgrown in the height of summer. Quiet lanes. Recommended map: OS Explorer 242 Telford and Wrekin. |
This picturesque and varied undulating walk starts from the small village of Homer and makes its way to the neighbouring hamlet of Sheinton with its delightful little church sitting up on a rise. The route also offers views of the nearby Wrekin and the more distant aspect of the Shropshire hills.
The Route

(1) With your back to the green and road through the village look for a footpath sign and concealed stile in the hedge on the right. Cross and go half left over the field to join the left-hand fence line and walk down to cross a stile. Go ahead crossing a stile and footbridge and along a clear woodland path and up a long flight of old steps. Over a stile and continue forward on the field left-hand boundary to exit onto a lane. |
(2) Go left on the road. Within a short distance of passing the entrance to Sheinwood Farm, where the lane bends gently right, go left through double gates (concealed footpath finger post) and down the field boundary towards a cottage. Round the field corner and through a gateway. Go forward over the arable field bearing very slightly right to cross a stile in the facing tree line. Go ahead down through the wood crossing a footbridge. Keep forward on the woodland path which initially makes a steepish ascent ignoring all tracks off to eventually exit the trees via a footbridge.
|
(3) Ignore a path right and go forward across the field passing a redundant stile. Cross another stile and go half left and ahead to a stile in the facing hedge line. Go ahead a few paces and then left through a gateway and forward on a woodland path to exit on to a rough roadway. Go right down the road to join a county road at Sheinton. Go left through the hamlet passing the church on your right. Cross Sheinton Brook and keep the lane uphill for a short distance. Upon cresting the rise go left on a metalled road to Belswardyne Farm and Hall. |

(4) At a T-junction with a farm building on your right go left on a rough roadway with the hall wall to the right. Round a corner and within a few paces, at a junction, go left (waymark) and down the enclosed private road, passing a cottage, left.

(5) Within a short distance go left over a stile into woodland. Go ahead for about 50 yards, with a pool left and then go right up what initially is a shallow gully and continue forward in a straight line on an uneven path which may not always be clear on the ground and can get overgrown which makes a gradual ascent through the trees. It eventually emerges on to a forest track Go right and through a gateway. |
(6) Go half left over the field to the corner of woodland. Pass through a gateway and go ahead with the trees on your right. At the wood corner continue forward to cross stile. Go down the steepish slope to a footbridge. Ignore footpath, left, and go forward up the slope. At the corner of the woodland bear half right continuing to climb and on to cross a stile adjacent a gate. Go ahead on the field boundary - hedge right - crossing a stile. Over another stile and forward to the road in Homer. Go left back to the start.
