Supporting People
Floating Support Services - Promoting Independent Living
What is Supporting People?
Supporting People is a partnership between Government and local community services to help vulnerable people live independently in the community. From April 2003, a separate Supporting People Grant has been paid directly to the service provider, which meets housing-related support costs.
What is Floating Support?
Floating Support is a flexible service that helps you to live independently. We aim to provide practical support for people from age 18 and upward. This will include elderly people, people with mental health problems, learning difficulties, domestic violence and other illnesses.
What types of Support Services?
The Team provides support that promotes independent living, including:
- Assistance with learning independent living skills
- Advice and assistance with claiming welfare benefits and Housing Benefits
- Advice on aids and adaptations
- General Counselling and support with day to day living
- Advice and assistance with budgeting and managing your bills
- Help with your correspondence
- Assistance with contacting other agencies involved in your care
- Assistance with managing your tenancy
What we don't do
Provide personal care services, such as bathing, administering medication and shopping, but we can advise you with making suitable arrangements for your personal care.
The Floating Support Service
Floating support services are delivered by a team of experienced, skilled and fully trained staff.
How can I access Floating Support?
Floating Support can be accessed via a referral process. This can include through a member of your family, friend, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Doctor and any advice or support agency, or, you can refer yourself.

What happens Next?
Our Housing Support Officers will visit you at home to assess your needs and will draw up a support plan based upon the information you have provided.
They will complete an assessment of your needs and agree a support plan based on the information you provide. Your support plan will be reviewed every six months. The level of support provided and frequency of visits depends on your individual needs.
