Walking and Cycling

Walking in the district

Below are a selection of walks from throughout the district. Before following any of the walks below we suggest you read our
advice for walkers section.

BDC walk grades and advice for walkers

The descriptions for each walk, together with the sketch map, should ensure route finding is straightforward. The use of the appropriate Ordnance Survey map - preferably the 1:25,000 scale Explorer series - is recommended and also adds interest to a country walk.

The walks are graded according to their length, gradients, the type of terrain and any obstacles likely to be encountered.

Easy: Relatively short walks of about one to three miles on mainly level ground with gentle gradients on good field or woodland paths/tracks. Walks may involve stiles, short flights of steps, and footbridges. Likely to encounter cultivated land and crops but the line of path should be clear. Some stretches on quiet lanes and pavements. Trainers or shoes with a good tread may be adequate in dry weather.

Moderate: As for easy walks, but the walk may be longer with slightly steeper gradients. Some paths may be rough or wet under foot, narrow and, at height of summer, overgrown. Footpaths may not always be clear on the ground. Walking boots are recommended.

Energetic: As for easy and moderate walks, but likely to involve longer steeper climbs and decents suitable for the more fit walker. Route finding may be more difficult.

After rain and in winter any country walk is likely to involve muddy patches. For all walks it is sensible to wear suitable boots. In summer or dry weather stout shoes or trainers with a good tread may be adequate on easier walks. Take waterproof clothing and a small rucksack to carry a snack and a drink.

As with all sporting and leisure activities country walking can involve hazards and inherent dangers. All walkers should be aware that they have a responsibility to identify any such problems and take reasonable precautions to maintain their safety.

All the walks listed have been checked out. But the countryside and conditions can alter and routes may be subject to slight variations and change. Any footpath obstructions should be reported to the:
