How much exercise should I be doing?

It is recommended that you should do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five times per week.

Moderate intensity activity leaves you feeling:

  • Slightly warmer
  • Breathing a little heavier
  • With your heart beating slightly faster
  • But still allowing you to hold a conversation comfortably

There are numerous activities that you can make part of your everyday routine to help improve your health and well being.

Whilst it is important to make sure that you challenge yourself when it comes to physical activity, to ensure that your health and well being continues to benefit you shouldn't make yourself feel uncomfortably tired and extremely short of breath.

Exercising with a friend or others will add a social element to your physical activity and keep you motivated.

Hints and tips to help increase your level of physical activity

  1. Take a walking break instead of a sitting break
  2. Use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator
  3. Park slightly further away from your destination
  4. Walk instead of driving if the distance is short
  5. Get off the bus a stop early
  6. Change the channel on the TV without the remote!
  7. Aim to climb the stairs 10 times a day
  8. Do extra house work or gardening
  9. Get up from your chair and take a 3 minute walk every hour
  10. Walk every supermarket aisle whether you need to or not!
