Albrighton walk map

Map illustrated by Amy Walford from Oldbury Wells School

Start/parking: Car park adjacent the Crown Inn, High Street, Albrighton.

Grade: Easy.

Distance: Two and a half miles.

Terrain: Level walking on good field paths - some over arable land. Quiet lanes and pavement of main road.

Refreshments: Horns of Boningale Inn, pubs and shops in Albrighton.

Recommended map: OS Explorer 242 Telford & Wrekin.

This walk starting from the centre of Albrighton is quickly into open countryside via a footpath which leaves the eastern end of the High Street. Good field paths then provide a link to the neighbouring parish of Boningale - with the chance of refreshments at an old inn.

The Route

Ladder Stile

(1) From the car park walk left along High Street. Having passed the Harp Hotel - and one footpath - go right, opposite the far end of a row of shops, on an enclosed path. Ignore a footpath, right, and go forward through a wicket gate. Go ahead on the wide enclosed path to a stile to the right of a gate. The definitive right of way crosses the stile to go ahead on the right-hand boundary of the narrow field. About half way along the field it veers left to cross a ladder stile. Then right and on to a footbridge. Local usage avoids the stiles and goes ahead on the enclosed path.

(2) At the end of the enclosed path go forward to cross the facing footbridge - ignoring the bridge left - and proceed straight on across the field to a stile. Cross and go ahead on the field left-hand boundary - hedge on the left. Continue forward through a wide gap - now with hedge on your right.

(3) About 14 yards after walking over a short stretch of duck boards at a wet patch go right at a waymark post through a gap in the hedge. Go ahead on the left-hand boundary and a short distance before the field corner go left over footbridge and stile. Go right and forward to cross another stile. Continue ahead on field boundary to exit on to the A464. Go right on the pavement, passing the Horns of Boningale pub and the entrance to a lane into Boningale. The Horns in at Boningale

Albrighton Crop Field (4) A short distance after passing a road junction sign on the left go right through a wide gap in the hedge on a signed footpath - usually marked out - which goes straight forward over the arable field. Pass into the next field and continue ahead on the same line towards a house to exit on to Newhouse Lane via a wicket gate. Go right on the quiet road for just under a quarter of a mile.

(5) Immediately after passing Barclay Cottage go right over a stile. Go half left to cross the field diagonally - with a school over to the left - to a stile. Cross and go half left to continue on the same line to a stile in the far left-hand corner. Over here and go right through a gateway and ahead on the enclosed path.

(6) Within a short distance go left over a stile to go ahead on enclosed path. Bear right and ahead on a metalled driveway to exit on to High Street in Albrighton. Go left to retrace steps back to the car park.
