Second Adult Rebate

Did you know you could be eligible for a reduction in your Council Tax if a second adult in your property is on Income Support / Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based) or a low income?

This is known as Second Adult Rebate

Second Adult Rebate is awarded for Council Tax Benefit only and is designed to compensate for the loss of the 25% Council Tax discount caused by having a 'second adult' in your property.

The 'second adult' could be:

  • Adult sons or daughters;
  • Friends;
  • Relatives, such as elderly parents.

The person liable to pay Council Tax on the property must apply for the reduction. There are special rules that apply:

  • At no point is the claimant's financial circumstances taken into account
  • The £16,000.00 capital limit does not apply to either the claimant or the 'Second Adult'.

You could also be entitled to Second Adult Rebate if there is more than 1 'Second Adult' in your property, providing they are on Income Support / Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based) or a low income.

For further information, or an application form please contact the Benefits Section, call into one of our Benefit Surgeries or email
benefits@bridgnorth-dc.gov.uk

The only requirement is that the applicant provides proof of Identity and National Insurance number and proof of the 'second adult's' income.
